Highly underated subject Apr 07, 2008 A bit of a long read, but a great reference book. Dr.Dement and Mr. Vaughan describe one of the most overlooked aspect of health, namely sleep. But, as with most university professors, the writing is borderline text book and can be a dry read for the layperson. Personally, I have only read selected chapters of this book due to its 450 pages. I think that these two authors could put together an awesome book if they condensed it down to about 150 pages. I have heeded this book's advice. I started cutting back on my exercise, herbs and supplements and concentrated on more sleep. Even as much as 20 minutes more a day have improved my own health, mood and performance.

dilute content Feb 28, 2008 I'm your run-of-the-mill insomniac, and thought I would get a few tips about how to get some better sleep from this very thick book. There were a few interesting topics discussed, but I don't feel like it did anything to help me gain an understanding of how I could sleep better. Most of the discussion was on normal sleep or disorders such as sleep apnea. The actual informational content of this book could fit into about a quarter of the pages, but the good doctor is EXTREMELY repetitive.
This book will put you to sleep Dec 17, 2007 The author spends too much time telling us his life story and not enough solid information about sleep. Dated.
Invaluable health info Jul 22, 2007 The author is one of the pioneers of sleep research, totally in command of his subject and it's surprising exactly how important sleep is in a healthy lifestyle. My only complaint: I would have preferred more sleep research results and less sleep research.

Wonderful work Jan 19, 2007 "After all the research I've done on sleep problems over the past four decades, my most significant finding is that ignorance is the worst sleep disorder of them all."
A half century of work combined to create a unique perspective. The first chapters deal with the basics: what sleep is and what we know about it. The next chapters deal with biology and sleep debt; causes: such as insomnia, apnea, narcolepsy, and fatigue; the effects: on the immune system and mood; dreams; personal needs; children; lifestyle. The appendix contains a list of sleep centers in each state.
"People need to change the way they sleep and live."
My sleep problems were brought on by personal troubles and trying to run a business 24/7; simplification was the answer. Excellent book; highly recommended, even for those just interested in the subject.
"Healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determination in predicting longevity."
Wish you well
